Wahoo

15 April 2015 | Portobelo, Panama
Becky/84 degrees, cloudy, 12 knots wind, 5 knots speed, reach sail
A first on Kokomo! Our largest fish caught and landed! A 40 lbs., 4’1” wahoo. It was huge!

First we tried to put it into our garbage can, but it didn’t fit.

So we ended up putting it in the cockpit where Denny cleaned it.

I guess I should start at the beginning when it all started. This morning at 4 am we left San Blas for Portobelo. At 6 am when the sun was just starting to rise, bam! Fish on! We reduced sail and worked on getting it onto the boat. This is exactly what we hoped for as we are heading to Bocas del Toro to meet some friends from Tacoma – the Musica’s & Jansen’s. We told them we would bring fresh fish and we are so glad to come through!

Not only were we happy with the fish, but the sail over was only 10 hours. Perfect wind conditions and no rain. Denny spotted a 55’ catamaran leave about an hour behind us. Being the racer at heart, he kept an eye on the catamaran. He anchored in the bay next to us about an hour after us. Yes Denny, you did well!

After several attempts to solve our autopilot problems, Denny ordered and I brought back from Tacoma a whole new unit. He installed it and it works perfect. So nice to have that working again! The one thing that still isn’t working is the wind indicator. Which means I have to rely on feel as to where the wind is. Denny is much better on this than I am. I like to see on the instruments rather than feel when the wind is behind me if we are close to a crash jib. Guess that will get fix here soon.

We will spend a couple nights here in Portobelo and of course having dinner at Captain Jack’s!

Life is good on Kokomo!

Becky
