Strike in Cusco
21 October 2015 | Cusco, Peru
Becky/70 day, 50 at night, no rain
This morning Denny and I walked to the post office to mail some postcards. Postal is not cheep, $3/postcard! Anyway, while walking we noticed there were no cars or buses on the streets. Most of the businesses were closed, as well as the San Pedro Market and grocery store. At first we thought there was a celebration with closed streets for a parade. So when we got back to the hostel we found out it is a strike for 2 days (Wed & Thurs). This is what the strike is about:
The protesters’ grievances are varied, but the principal demands of the strikers is that construction begin immediately on two important projects: The South Peruvian Gasoducto, and the Chinchero International Airport. The strike was initially scheduled for Feb. 25 an 26.
The above photo is of a bus coming down in front of our hostel. We have to walk this street every day to go to school. The bus takes up so much of the road that you have to stop and turn sideways. Guess today and tomorrow I won't have to worry about that!
