Anyone interested in knowing the origin of the name of this creek? Legend has it local Indians took mud from the bottom of this creek to make a kind of paste that cured the great explorer Capt. John Smith's stingray wound. And where did he get this wound? Why, at Stingray Point just south of here, of course!
I was at this same spot last year on October 15 during the trip south after the boat show in Annapolis. It's a great anchorage with lots of protection. The reason I am here right now is I left Deltaville this morning after waiting a week to get the engine repaired ($1,300 for new fuel injectors), I decided to make a move up to The Solomon's. Deltaville is a good place to provision and get boat work done but nothing to do other than sit on the boat and wait. I don't do that very well - STILL. Anyway, the forecast was for NE 5 - 10 kts; what I got was N 15 - 20 kts and 3' - 5' waves on the nose. After slogging it for 2 hours and things were getting worse, not better, I decided to call it and pulled off here to wait it out. 15 nm total traveled and only 5 nm made good due to the extra distances in and out of the respective creeks. The dogs were not happy with the pitching deck and at one point I looked down below and they were sliding all over the place. Sort of looked like little white mops without handles sliding around on the sole of the saloon. So we are in a good spot for now and if the forecast is correct, won't be going anywhere until Saturday at the earliest, and possibly even Sunday. I had hoped to make Solomons Island by tomorrow as there is much more to do there. That is where I met Don and Maryann of Straight from the Heart while listening to ZZ Top live from the dinghy. Oh well ...
I also looked back to last year to see when it was that I stopped in Deltaville on the trip north, and that was June 15, so I am still about 10 days ahead of last year in terms of progress going north. I don't know if these continuous thunderstorms that are rolling through here are part of the typical weather pattern for this time of the year, but I noted the same kind of stuff in my journal last year.
I passed on going to Tangier Island as originally planned at this time due to the weather. Maybe I will get the chance to see that on the return trip south.
