Preparing for nasty weather
18 October 2011 | Wrightsville Beach, NC
Randy - 80 and sunny, L&V winds - AGAIN! :-)
The picture of Wrightsville Beach, NC anchorage area: yeah, I know it is crooked, and no I was not drinking when I took it. I just did not want to go through the hassle of uploading another picture. Lazy, I guess ...
Another day of bridges on the ICW resulted in only 34 nm over nine hours, with nearly 2 hours of stopped time waiting for bridge openings. I also pulled up short by 30 nm of my hoped-for goal of stopping just west of Southport, NC because I would have run out of daylight and this is as good a place as any to wait out the weather.
The forecast for tonight and tomorrow is heavy thunderstorms with very high winds. We'll see what develops. I am anchored in 20' of water with 150' of chain out and got a good hook set (anchor). I have only anchored here once before and am told that some people not good at setting their anchors securely drag a lot. I am more concerned about others dragging than I am myself, which is still a problem if they drag towards me. Regardless, I will sleep with one eye open tonight.
The forecast is consistent with what I saw yesterday in that it is going to get nasty tonight and into tomorrow. I plan to hang here through tomorrow night and look for a departure late Thursday or early Friday to go offshore and head for at least Charleston, and possibly Savannah. Will write more when I know as the weather develops.
