Off to the Yasawa Islands
18 June 2010
After loading up with fruit and veg from the market, we left Savusavu at first light bound for the Yasawa Islands. What looks like smoke in the early morning photo is actually steam from the hot springs.
We had hoped to stay a night or two at Yadua en route, but according to customs it was out of bounds due to 'trouble with the native wildlife'. We thought it was unlikely to be the local villagers, more likely some cruisers had gone ashore (this is not allowed) at the little island which is host to the rare Fijian crested iguana- a protected species. Instead we had a less convenient and less beautiful anchorage as our stopping place en route to Yasawa Island, but it was still pleasant. We had an early start next day for the long trip across flat seas with no wind. Sadly no fish were caught, but we were entertained by the greatest density of flying fish we have ever seen. They rose from the sea in front of the boat like a solid cloud of thick mist, sparkling blue in the sunshine.
We arrived at the top of the Yasawas about 3pm, perfect timing, and wove through the reefs to a bay in front of a little village. A rolly anchorage, but a pretty one. We went ashore to do sevusevu the next morning and had a look around the village. The villages this side of Fiji seem more used to seeing tourists, but we were still treated very pleasantly. The villagers here were very excited as the following day they were going to have a rugby match with a neighbouring island, and they had built a brand new hut to house the visiting team. You can see this in one of the photos, plus another house they are building.
