Following Captain Cook

Lizard island is a gorgeous island named by the then Lieutenant Cook after the many lizards he spotted. They are still here. Picture.
We had a 38 mile journey to get here. we sailed with our third reef in the mainsail and still arrived after a rather bumpy journey by 11 am. There are a small group of islands with beautiful lagoons between them. The islands are not typical coral reefs, rather they are granite outcrops of continental Australia with fringing reefs around them. For that reason they rise high above the sea. We climbed up to Cooks Lookout, an exhausting climb to the 358m peak in the hot sun. Captain Cook had almost lost his ship on the Endeavour Reef and scaled this peak to see if he could find a way through the reefs. To the East you can just make out the line of the outer barrier. In the moist haze nearby islands can be seen but the highlight is the blue azure of the lagoons around Lizard Island. We snorkeled some of the reefs and although the strong winds made the visibility poor but you could still make out loads of different coral formations and many fishes.
