MONA the art gallery to beat all art galleries

As we flew into Tasmania Michael caught up on the Economist and read an article about a new art gallery just outside Hobart, MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art. It seemed a bit unusual for the Economist to be writing about a gallery in Hobart, so we had to check it out. It is amazing. Without boasting it would be true to say we have been to a few galleries, the various Gulbenkians, the Tates, MOMA in New York, the Pompidou Centre, Madrid etc etc but this gallery which must be the most Southerly major art gallery in the world beats the lot! It is stupendous. The best approach to it is by boat. We left on the 10am boat heading up river. You pass the US warship at the cruise dock, on to the fishing boats, further up the river a monstrous factory purifying zinc and then on the left you see attractive houses built above a point and a large modern building. The building is made of steel and is built into the cliff. There are no windows = the entire gallery is underground.
