"Lock-bound"
15 June 2015
From Dede's Perspective:
We are "lock bound"! Never heard of this 'til it happened today!
Left Rome, NY, at 7am sharp with 2 other cruisers, to cross Lake Oneida. After we left Rome, we had to lock DOWN about 45ft! (Interesting experience after looking UP more than 500ft)! Rain was heavy during the night, and expected to rain/storm more today. I didn't know what the big deal was about crossing a lake (20miles by 5miles) but all the cruising guides say to expect 6ft waves (really? in a lake? I wonder if you can surf!!). Apparently, our planned early morning crossing was successful in avoiding those "rough seas)!
We arrived at the esskay Marina, Brewerton, NY (we had made a reservation) on the north west shore of the lake early afternoon. They were not ready for us, but "made room" on the east side of their fuel dock. The people here…and the marina…could not be more customer friendly! Free showers, wifi and even 2 courtesy cars. We settled in, Jim napped and I biked over for a manicure/pedicure (got to know your priorities on this cruise!).
During our day here, we received a notice from the NY Canal Corporation that, mariners are advised, effective immediately, the Oswego Canal and Erie Canal are closed , and expected to remain closed for approximately 1-week. With all the heavy rains, the lakes, rivers and canals are flooded; water levels need to recede to reposition navigational aids!
So, we are "lock-bound" between L23 and L26! Our plan was to leave tomorrow am, go up Oswego Canal and into Lake Ontario. Deep-6 that plan! So, we are here indefinitely! Went out to dinner with other cruisers (like I said, we set our priorities), rented a car for a week and will travel on land to ??
Stay tuned…and dry...
