At around 6am this morning passed the latitude of the NE part of the main island of Tasmania so you could say I have crossed Bass Strait for a third time under my own keel and 5 times in a yacht. This time was the most benign and for that I am truly thankful as its reputation is well deserved. Up to midday a steady West to Northwesterly pushed us along at over 6 knots in delightful sunny conditions and by 8am the distant mountains came clearly into view; however this fresh breeze faded to variables in the afternoon. Although progress was slow it was not at all unpleasant in the bright sunshine as there was always just enough wind to fill the full main and jib and stop the jarring associated with a complete calm.
Time to get out the two thick manuals to study the intricacies of the autopilot. Very helpfully they told me in eighteen different languages and in some detail that to actually find out how to operate the pilot I had to get onto the World Wide Web. Sigh. The bright side is there are only 8 different buttons. One is standby and one is autopilot so I'll stick to these two.
It's now 6:45 pm and a nice light SE breeze is just gently moving us along in the general direction of Tasman Island and with light variables forecast a watchful night lies ahead.
