8:30pm Thursday 31st August 2017 ( UTC+7 ) A fresh breeze averaging 18 knots from the SSW had me playing around with the trim of the self steering gear as though with a double reefed main and jib the tendency in the moderate squalls was to round up. By furling a fair bit of the jib very little was lost in speed and a much more comfortable ride was the result. I could see the self steering line around the hub on the main wheel was becoming frayed and today in nice clear sunny weather it let go completely. Not a difficult job to replace but as the wheel was a moving target with the electric autopilot engaged a little bit of hit and miss was involved. This was also day one for deploying the lure. Again a very simple job - that is once I had all the components gathered from the strange places the previous gales had placed them. Needless to say no luck but early days.
