Fierce Squall
02 November 2017 | 1350 Miles to Hierro
9:00pm Wednesday 1st November 2017 ( UTC-2 ) A few mild showers this afternoon and had a welcome shower myself. Towards dusk a fierce squall hit overpowering the autopilot. I strapped on and took over the helm but with the full main could not get the boat to run downwind. Trying to keep the jib from violently flogging the pressure was so great on both sails it was putting the cockpit coaming and winch under water. Managed to ease out the main so it was more or less streaming in the wind and kept the jib from flogging but it was tough going for perhaps an hour in the high wind. Just had the shorts on and it didn't seem too cold except when some solid spray came over the side - it felt like a warm bath. With the autopilot tripping out it also turned off the wind instrument which is now not functioning. Maybe I can sort a solution in the morning. Almost becalmed now. A tough evening.
