Taking the Fifth
24 November 2017 | 345 Miles to Boa Vista
5:30pm Friday 24th November 2017 ( UTC-2 ) Yes it's now the beginning of Month Five at sea and I refuse to say anything which might incriminate me or explain my reasons for blundering from one blue hole into the next. Suffice it to say that with a subtle change of the wind a little more to the West I have decided to head to the East of the Cape Verde Islands and have one of them, Boa Vista, as my next turning point. The North East Trades are still eluding me but maybe in two more days..... The sailing again has been very pleasant close hauled to a 10 knot breeze so with the SilentWind spinning away I thought I'd make hay when the sun shines or in my case water when the wind blows. The power was there but the flow seemed down a bit - more of a drip than a trickle - and to my annoyance it was still decidedly salty after half an hour. There is only one control on the water maker which is a purge valve to rid the membrane cylinder of air which I cycled for ten minutes and the flow resumed. The big problem is that it has a quite salty taste even after producing 8 litres of water in two hours. I will have to make enquiries as to what percentage of sea water is allowed in fresh such that full good health is maintained. I never take salt or use it in cooking and at certain times and circumstances salt tablets have been recommended so I don't think it will be a real problem. I have close to 200 litres of almost pure water on board, plus I have an untried manual water ma ker so it's more a niggle than a worry.
