07 December 2017 | 3735 Miles to Cape Horn
6:00pm Thursday 7th December 2017 ( UTC-2 ) Anita commented on the fact that I am now getting closer to home which is the feeling I share now that I have crossed the Equator. I have even taken the bold step of naming my next turn point, Cape Horn, as my position as most of my readers would be unfamiliar with place names down the coast of Brazil besides of course Rio. Now that I have crossed the Equator I thought it time to compare my progress in L'Eau Commotion to that in Katherine Ann as the distance from here to either Sydney or Southport along my chosen route is basically the same. Katherine Ann took 152 days to this point and L'Eau Commotion 132. Doing a quick comparison and dividing the days by four yielded 38 and 33, the exact lengths of the two vessels so even though I felt I had lost a lot of time recently the comparison is favourable with L'Eau Commotion being 15% faster. Also as an aside, dividing by 2 gives 76 & 66 the exact ratio of Nautical ( 6080 ft ) to Statute ( 5280 ft ) Miles, so for each Mile Kather ine Ann would travel L'Eau Commotion would cover the longer Nautical mile. Looking ahead this could well have us rounding Cape Horn in the middle of January, very much to plan. The most direct feasible distance from Cape Horn to Southport is around 6000 miles but the route I have planned via Robinson Crusoe, Easter and Pitcairn Islands is closer to 8400 miles so I have a little over 12000 miles to go. The sailing conditions this past week have been near perfect and the forecast for next week promises to be much the same. Just for a short time today I had to close the saloon hatch to keep out the occasional splash but for the rest of the time a pleasant flow through cooling breeze was enjoyed.
