The Age of the Universe and the Genius of Einstein
08 December 2017 | 3635 Miles to The Horn
11:00am Friday 8th December 2017 ( UTC-2 ) Back around the Fifties it was very much de jure to consider the age of the Universe at 2 Billion years. Indeed there were articles written about the wonders of curved space time and how, should you be lucky enough to travel in a straight line at the speed of light you would arrive back at the same place you started from not much older and only a little wiser. After his sad demise people started looking at this 2 Billion year time frame and Geologists, due to the fairly recent introduction of radio active dating of rocks, pointed out to the Physicists that indeed on Earth there were sediments older than this. Not a problem they said. We will use Einsteins Equations to change this figure. So due to this highly Scientific Approach the Age of the Universe by stages stretched out 20 Billion years. Now to advance Science you must have Consensus at Conferences so amidst the gentle sound of pipes being tapped on corduroys ( this was before the Surgeon General ) a fair average was s truck at ( 20 + 2 ) / 2 11 Billion years. This was mulled over and some bright Phd ( Piled higher and deeper ) candidate suggested that this was a bit trite so let's add back the original 2 Billion years to get ( 20 + 2 ) / 2 + 2 13 Billion years . ( You can now grasp how important that figure 2 is Einsteins original equation. ) So all the Physicists then retired to their ivy encrusted rooms and because there were dozens and dozens of True Solutions to Einstein's Field Equations and even more Constants and Assumptions none could come up with that magic Number 13 . Again in true Scientific Consensus style they averaged out all their answers and we now have that unarguable Scientific Fact . Exactly 13.7 Billion Years ago the Whole of the Universe including the Trillions of Stars in each of the Billions of Galaxies were all squeezed into a ball as big as your little fingernail. It would be easier on this day to have the Pope deny the dogma of the Immaculate Conception than to have a single Professor of Physics change his mind on this subject.
