Easing Along
10 January 2018 | 360 Miles to Cape Horn
4:00pm Wednesday 10th January 2018 We are now about 60 miles North West of the main island of West Falkland and as such are well out of visual range. If you use your imagination you can see a certain smudginess on the horizon where the Island might be but beyond that the sky is eight eighths blue with a moderating North Westerly breeze. The wind came up very gently from nothing to 4 or 5 knots about 11:00pm last night, gradually strengthened to fresh in the morning requiring a few reefs and now easing, all the while from the North West. The sea is therefore almost flat with no hint of a swell but I do feel we have a bit of current against us. With the bright sunshine all the long day of about 16 hours the cabin is now a very pleasant 19C and a comfortable night sail is expected with more of the same tomorrow. There is now a clear run all the way to the Straits of Lemaire which I intend to pass through and though the weather can change rapidly in these latitudes all the indications are for a smooth though occas ionally brisk run over the next four days.
