Arrival at Dana Point
14 July 2014
Boker Tov made it to Dana Point by around 3:00 in the afternoon, leaving several hours to play. Dana Point is a great anchorage among the many great anchorages I have had the pleasure of experiencing in my years of sailboat cruising. At first I went to the northern part, which had anchoring, but in water that was devoid of life or interest, and near a fuel dock. It became obvious that the better anchorage was off Point Loma to the south, where the original tall rigger sailboats found refuge behind Point Loma. I headed in that direction, but found that my prop was so fouled with sea grass that I could hardly make progress along the protected channel that runs south to north on the western end of the harbor. When I finally made it to the north anchorage, it all made sense. Several sailboats were anchored there when none were anchored at the barren southern anchorage. There was a beautiful beach brimming with families swimming and playing. Replicas of historic sailing vessels were docked along a multi-million dollar maritime educational center. And the surf at the point, a short walk from the dinghy dock, Wow. As good as Mission Bay was, Dana Point was even better.
