Approaching Avalon
26 July 2014
The first time I cruised to Catalina Island was with my brother on a crappy sailboat we rented from some dude. This was before GPS and chartplotting smartphones, so we had to navigate by compass bearing. Never knew exactly how far we were from anything or how fast we were going. We got lost on the way home, but the coast guard who was apparently watching us on his radar guided us home. This trip was the opposite. I knew exactly where I was at every moment, how far I was from the destination, how fast I was going, I was on auto-pilot pretty much the whole way, and I had enough fuel to get there and home and part way back if necessary. Traveling to Catalina Island on Boker Tov was actually pretty easy - the boat is made for that passage - and a lot more I believe. I arrived early in the afternoon, looked unsuccessfully for a decent anchorage, and took a mooring right off the beach and restaurant for $30. A long time cruising goal accomplished.
