Rounding Point Loma on the way back to San Diego
02 August 2014
The next morning I was off again on the last day-long leg of the voyage, from Oceanside to San Diego. Mark my words, stay well offshore to avoid the kelp, especially around the points, particularly Point Loma. Buoy #3 is not far enough out anymore. There are still plenty of floaters beyond that. It may be altogether impossible to come into San Diego bay without encountering kelp to some extent. It didn' cause too much problem for Boker Tov, but it was a factor. I deviated from the straight line course many times over the voyage to avoid kelp beds. That and the increased winds and waves around the point made for an adventurous rounding back into San Diego. The winds in the bay were high enough that I doused the jib and motorsailed most of the way home in order to enjoy a smooth and easy ride.
