Cape Fear River

Cheryl's Notes:
We got a late start today, so only traveled about 15 miles. We had to pass through Snow's Cut and enter the Cape Fear River. This juncture in the waterway has opposing currents and can be a major drama. We wanted hit high tide on Snow's Cut and the ebbing tide on the Cape Fear River. The two intersected at about 11:30, so we pulled up the anchor at 11:00 and headed back into the waterway. As we were preparing to raise anchor, we noticed a large turtle swimming past the bow of the boat. I am not sure what kind of turtle it was, but it was pretty big.
We had an issue with a bridge clearance at high water. Scandia and our boat would be no problem, but Grateful Attitudes has a mast clearance of 62 feet. The bridge was supposed to be 65 feet, but really only registered 63 feet at high tide. Dave and Beth barely cleared, but made it just fine. We parted ways with them as they sailed out into the Atlantic. We continued on to the only anchorage that we could make today after such a late start. We are now in Southport, NC. Tomorrow we will head to Barefoot Landing in Myrtle Beach. South Carolina hear we come.
John's Notes:
Pretty uneventful day. Snow's cut wasn't all that bad and the Cape Fear River wasn't much more. There isn't as much traffic on the waterway today. The herd has thinned a bit since earlier in the week. Fine with me.
One of our headphones that we use for exchanging information when we are anchoring has developed a problem. Until we fix it or find a new one, we are back to the old fashion way of using hand signals and yelling instructions. Really miss those headphones.
