Across the Great Bahama Bank

20 March 2010 | Great Isaac Shoal, Bahamas
John and Cheryl
Cheryl's Notes:

We got an early start this morning with plans to get to the edge of the Great Bahamas Bank to anchor for the night. The wind was supposed to be light and variable today, but we had steady winds of 10-15. At least the waves were not a big today. We made steady progress and were able to make it to the Hens and Chickens waypoint. Unlike yesterday, we went 84 miles in twelve hours. Unfortunately, the winds started to pick up just as we were getting close to the anchorage at Great Isaac Cay. We dropped the hook in 20 knot winds and the boat rocked and rolled all night. I don't think that we got more than two hours of sleep all night. I spent most of the night picking up objects that were catapulting around the inside cabin. So far we are 0 for 2 on the weather predictions.

John's Notes:

We anchored in deep water tonight. At least for us. It was about 28' deep. We are usually anchored in 10' or less. We have a great view of Great Isaac Light. Also have a great view of the run down building adjacent to it. Hope the light house is kept in better shape than the rest of the place.

The anchorage wasn't quite as bad as Black Point, but not by much. No sleep tonight. We are really looking forward to completing the crossing.
