Great Anchor Drag, Part 2

Cheryl’s Notes:
So Sunday ended up being the Great Anchor Drag, part 2. We spent the day on the boat resting up from Saturday. We decided to put off our dinghy repair until Monday, as the docks are busy on the weekend. We were sitting around in the cockpit playing cribbage when the next front came through. Our friends on Liberty have a subscribed radar weather program, and told us that it looked like mostly rain. Not even close. We had rain coming down in torrents, I couldn’t even see John on the bow of the boat. But we also had wind gusts of 50-70 knots. We dragged again, along with everyone else in the anchorage. For those that have been in this area, we dragged from in front of the Holiday Inn down to Calverts Museum. There was a 40 foot trawler with twin engines that ended up hard aground. Both engines revved and he couldn’t hold her. Our new friends, John and Sandy from Lakeland, MN aboard Passport were also on the bottom. When the storm passed we anchored near them, and away from the other pack of boats.
Shortly after the storm, Senior Moments with Maury and Sandi aboard anchored near us. We met them while anchored in Washington DC. They were out in the Chesapeake when the storm hit. They were able to sail north east, as the storm passed to the south east of them. We hosted a little happy hour onboard Leprechaun after they got settled. More rain came through, but at least we had no wind. Today we are supposed to have some clouds and 15-20 knot winds, but that is manageable. We will probably hold off on the dinghy repair for one more day.
John’s Notes:
Well, that was interesting. I’m not sure that I have ever been in a worse thunderstorm. NOAA reported local winds at sustained 50kts with gusts to 70kts. Working on deck in those conditions are no fun. Unfortunately, I didn’t have much time to plan so I went up on deck with my phone in my pocket. Appears that the phone is toast. We are trying to dry it out with a hair dryer and desiccant but not really planning on that working. I hate the thought of having to get a new phone. All my phone numbers of just about everyone I have ever met are in that phone. Of course I don’t have them written down anywhere either. The good news is that Cheryl was somehow able to control the boat without the ability to see my hand signals from the bow. The rain obscured me only 30 some feet away. We really came close to a 47’Grand Banks. I had visions of calling Mike Berke this morning but somehow we survived. Hoping that is the last of the bad weather for awhile. At least until we get to someplace with better holding.
