First Real Mistake

30 July 2008 | Alpena, MI
John
Arrived at Thunder Bay Shores Marina with the winds about 18-20kts inside the marina. We radioed ahead and told them that we wanted to stop at the fuel dock before we went to a slip. Probably my first big mistake so far on the trip. We have touted the marinas that we have stayed in so far but they were mostly run by the State of Michigan. This is a private marina and only had one person on the dock. Well, to make it a short story, the kid on the dock wasn't much help and let the bow of the boat get away from him and we now have a damaged bow pulpit. It's bent enough that I am going to have to make some adjustments to the furler. Not sure how or if this one can be repaired. Everyone that knows me will expect that I will replace it when we get to North Carolina. Don't have Duane Dehn around to help with repairs anymore.

I'm cranky, the crew is cranky. We'll get over it. I just get mad at myself when I think there was something I could have or should have done to prevent some things. More later.

Note to Dennis & Janet:

The 9.44 max boat speed was the most we recorded yesterday. Not the speed that we were going when we took the picture. Remember the various screens you can look at on the knot meter.
Actually, when we have been able to sail, we have been averaging over 7kts SOG as verified by the two GPS's we have aboard.
