Getting Closer

30 August 2008 | Solomons, MD
John
Arrived at Solomons Island about 5:30 this afternoon. If I had know the exact layout of the slip I would have elected to enter stern to. That not being the case, it is going to be a bitch getting out of here tomorrow. There is about 18-20' behind me until I am right on the next boat. There is a pelican post right on on starboard stern quarter and the dock on the other side. The kid who runs the fuel dock said that he would give us an assist in the morning.

We are too far from Norfolk to make it there tomorrow. Have to figure out where we are going to end up tomorrow night. Getting to be fewer and fewer choices. We have places to stop that are only about 20 miles away but we want to go at least 50-60 miles. At that distance, the choices to stop get fewer and fewer. Had we had any local knowledge about where we are tonight, we could have anchored about a100 yards from where we are paying $100 for the night. Cheryl asked why we didn't anchor but I told her that I had already given them my credit card number over the phone yesterday and that if I didn't show up, they were going to charge me anyway. Life is great in America.

Debbie called me this afternoon. Said that she was working on hurricane preparation for Gustuv. Working up emergency response teams to be deployed. She is concerned about where we are in relationship to Hannah. She said that it looks like Hannah will be a non event for us. Sure hope so.

Tommy and I have been on the boat 6 weeks today. We are ready to finish this trip and get home for awhile. It would have been different if we had weeks or months to do this trip and we could stop whenever we wanted. This is a mission.

Just talked to Becky. She is really sick. She is going to Croatia in a couple of weeks so I wanted to talk to her before she goes. Now if only I could hear from my grandaughter who wants to become part of my cruising family. Are you reading this Maddey?

Leprechaun is a total mess. It will take a couple of weeks to put her back in Bristol shape. Even then, not sure she will ever be the same.

Have I mentioned that I have seen several kewl trawlers?? Just maybe......................................

One other thing. When we tied off tonight Tommy said that he didn't think that he wanted to make happy hour at the local gin mill but that he needed the exercise. Anyone believe that?

Also forgot to mention that earlier today we were right in the middle of Annapolis Race Week.
Tommy and I were going to be good citizens and try and avoid the racers but there was just no way. I have never, except for the San Francisco to Vallejo race, ever seen so many boats racing at one time before. There were two huge fleets. We noticed that other sail boats under power and power boats were just plowing throught the racers so we followed suite. We didn't seem to upset anyone and were careful not to get in anyones way. Never seen so many J-Boats. The crews are huge. One boat must have had a crew of 18 or 20. Talk about rail meat.
