Sandpoint Chronicles Day 2
02 July 2015 | Sandpoint, Popof I, Alaska

It was a slow start today but I could see a few new boats had come in. Pleasure boats. There was Venture, a 60 foot Fleming with Tony Fleming himself aboard who quickly invited me aboard to come up and see how life on the water is meant to be lived. Then, there was the German sailing vessel Orca, with a long haired skipper who, when he told the story of his 27 day crossing from Hawaii, did so with an expression that was akin to some I have seen of exhausted Marines in the battle of the Pacific. The sun streamed down again for a second day and as I pottered about doing simple maintenance, an endless stream of fisherman, young and old walked by and took the time to stop and admire Let's Go! and chat awhile. I talk with them as long as they like and every time gain deeper insight into their profession and their lives. Invariably, they share some part of their knowledge that may prove valuable further up the line. And invariably, they are warm and friendly. John spotted me dinner at the Trident fish processing plant tonight so I got to see the folks that handle the fish after they are caught. All races, all nationalities. And finally, our day ended at the local tavern with Inge Martinsen, a man with a love of sailing and deep roots at Sandpoint. But perhaps I will save that for another time.
