Kanatak Lagoon, Portage Bay

10 July 2015 | Portage Bay, Alaskan Peninsula
Jim
Two nights at anchor, two very special anchorages. From Chignik yesterday, we headed for Port Wrangell 75 miles away. We did not start particularly early but managed to get in by 8:30 PM. With a name like Port Wrangell, you might expect a proper inhabited harbor. Far from it. Up a narrowing channel to a narrow dogleg entrance opening into an bowl of absolutely calm water surrounded by high scree clad mountains with a large waterfall cascading down a cliff at the head of the anchorage. Uninhabited. Fishing lines in, huge cod out. Fresh fish for dinner. Today we moved a mere 30 miles or so up the Peninsula so that we can make it to the famed Geographic Harbor tomorrow, 60 miles to the northwest. We selected Kanatak Lagoon in Portage Bay. The lagoon has a mixed reputation. Shelter in an easterly, a maelstrom in a northwesterly as williwaws of hurricane force pour down the valley from the surrounding mountains. Our forecast was for modest south westerly's so no problem. The other thing about Kanatak is that you need to have shallow draft to enter at low tide since there is a bar with four feet at low tide to cross to get in. Of course it was shortly after low tide when we arrived but with the good old Ovni, we pumped up the centerboard and rudder and came through with no difficulty into a huge lagoon of calm water surrounded by moonscape mountains. Let's Go! was once again dwarfed by her surroundings. It is hard to get the correct perspective from the boat but step ashore and it is obvious. Now, we have had sun for more than twenty four hours so things are looking better. We are beginning to see why people seek to cruise this area. Sun and gale free weather. No doubt a short term reprieve but oh so enjoyable.xxx --
