Year 9 Day 121 Bridgetown, Barbados
30 May 2016 | Bridgetown, Barbados
Mary Margaret, Overcast
Today, after making Dave’s B-day cake we went into town (Bridgetown) for a lovely lunch and to explore the area. The town is a wonderful mix of the past and the modern. They have maintained some of the old and are dealing with modern (litter) civilization. In entering the city via the dinghy, we turn into a canal that leads us toward the center of the town.
We walked along and discovered a home appliance store. We also found out that Barbados is on 110 volts/50hz. This was exciting since the boat is 110 volts and we have been in 220 volt territory for the last 8 years! Dave was able to buy a coffee maker!!!! He has been using a French press but prefers drip coffee. He was a happy boy! It is all about the little things! Next we explored the local fruit and vegetable stalls and crafts created by the locals. We continued walking and found our restaurant.
The restaurant’s name is “Waterfront”. The menu had a nice variety of dishes. It was not cheap but not unreasonable. Dave had seafood St. Jacques and I had a cheeseburger. Both were excellent! After lunch we wandered some more. We went to explore the grocery store and toured all of the stalls along the streets. We bought the local fruits and vegetables. All of the above was lovely. But what so impressed me was that everyone we met was so especially kind and so amazingly friendly and helpful. Everyone wanted to talk and give us suggestions and help. All were considerate and kind. For example, with my arthritis (bad knees) I am slow and somewhat cumbersome. When getting in or out of the dinghy I look unwieldy! Where we docked the street is right above us. When getting out of the dinghy an older gentleman stopped and offered to help and then took our garbage to get rid of it. Just to be kind! Then when getting into the dinghy a young girl stopped to offer me help! She was a teenager! How very sweet and kind! In my mind Barbados is a lovely place and has a lot of beauty but its greatest gift to our world is its AMAZINGLY KIND PEOPLE. We have not experienced so many random acts of kindness in a single day as today. What a wonderful gift we were given!
