While the Indian River is an eco-sanctuary, I really think its claim to fame is that is was the site of one of the scenes in the second Pirates of The Caribbean movie. This was the witches hut that was in that movie. Now, I am not sure how a movie can be made in an eco-sanctuary but I am guessing money talks. I hope that the funds were used by the government to increase the protections used in the sanctuary.

The banks of the Indian River were lined with all kinds of trees. Many of them had what are called buttress roots because they protect the banks from caving in.

Once we returned to Portsmouth, we then took a boat trip up the Indian River. It was a quite trip with the rain forest tree canopy casting us in dark shadows most of the time.

We loved our visit to the Kalinago Indian village and learned so much of their history, culture and government. Here I am with a former chief, Faustulus Joseph and one of the guides we had. Chief Joseph has written a book entitled: "In Our Carib Indian Village", I have just ordered a copy from Amazon. It is out of print and I feel lucky to be about to buy one. I bought one of Chief Joseph's hand carvings and he signed it for me.
