Pearl farm

This is my homework for the english lesson: to describe the visit of a pearl farm.

There are different sorts of pearls: Freshwater pearls, Seapearls and Keshi pearls. Most pearls are grown with the help of pearl farmers because in nature, only 1/5000 pearls grow round and beautiful. So in pearls farms the people fish oysters and put a little, round bit of mussleshell under the mollusque. Then they put the oysters back in the water and wait 1-2 years, until the piece of shell has transformed into a pearl. During these 2 years every 2 weeks the farmers need to wash the oysters properly and then put them back again in the water. After 2 years the farmers take the oysters out of the water and look, if there is a pearl. The first time there is a 50% chance to get a pearl. The second time just 35%. The third time we can just hope on 15% and the fourth time the oyster makes the pearl only in 5% of cases. Then the oysters can't make any pearl anymore and the farmers must fish new oysters. In the wild, oysters live for 15-20 years, but in pearl farms, they live only for 6-8 years. This is the way how to grow Seawater pearls.

When you want to buy a pearl, you must look for these 5 things:
- the size: the bigger it is, the more expensive it is
- the color: white pearls are the most expensive. You can also buy golden, silver, blue, green or purple pearls
- the reflection: the more you can se yourself, the more expensive it is
- the shape: the roundest, the more expensive
- the complexion: look if there are any imperfections or scratches
A pearl can cost 75'000Fr or more! This was the price for world's biggest pearl.

It was really interesting to visit the pearl farm and I hope that it also interested you.
