Eau entre 2 et 7 C, plantes bizarres, pas beaucoup de vie maritime a part de quelques meduses, etoiles de mer et moules. Ca change des Caraibes, quoi...

17/07/2011, Narssaq, SSW Greenland

Finally arrived in Narssaq, tired and happy, after a long day in the ice and the fjords.

Total trip from Newfoundland to Greenland took 1070Nm / 7 days.

Water temperature -1C to +6C. Air temperature 0C to +15C. Marielle and the girls will love it...

130 Nm to go

Three pilot whales following our boat yesterday morning.

Weather got much better now. Another 60 Nm to go and we will see our first icebergs...

According to the Iscentralen there is still quite a bit of pack ice, icebergs and bergy bits floating on and inside the coast, so we will probably need the whole day tomorrow to navigate our way through the ice. Destination is Narssaq inside Skovfjord, to officially check in with Greenland police, and then proceed to Narsarssuaq.

Grey
PC
13/07/2011, Somewhere between Newfoundland and Kap Farvel

No picture today - but just imagine an all encompassing grey. Dark grey sea, light grey fog, white boat. No cargos, no whales, no birds, no fishing buoys, no nothing, just grey. Grey drizzle.

The last two days were rather cold at 5 C as we were crossing the cold Labrador current (water temperature 5-6 C(, but today it got a bit warmer again, influence of the gulf stream? Water around 9 C. 84% humidity. Had winds up wo 44 Knlast night, waves up to 3m, fortunately it is calming down again, winds mostly SSE to SSW. 400 Nm behind u, another 500-700Nm to go to Greenland.

Ready to leave
PC
09/07/2011, St. John's, Newport

Libellule looking nice and clean after having spent over two weeks with Yves.

And finally, everyone is back on board, despite several delayed flights...
The crew is multinational as usual: Yves, Sylvain, Gonzalo and Philipp (F, E, CH). Everyone is itchy to get going, so everything is ready for the next leg.

Except for the weather: a big trough (35 Kn headwinds) is announced to come through later today and tomorrow, and so we decided to postpone the estimated departure time to tomorrow Sunday evening 20:00 LTC.

The next leg: Newfoundland-Greenland. Final destination in Greenland not clear yet, depending on development of pack ice along the SSW tip of Greenland, we will either head to Narssaq (900 Nm) or to Nuuk (1200 Nm), to be decided once we approach Southern Greenland and had a chance to study the most recent ice maps.

Made it to St. John's on Saturday night, just in time to have a nice beer (or two?) on George Street.

Newfies (that's how they call the Newfoundlanders here) are crazy, walking around in T-Shirt and shorts at 7°C and fog!
