Teambuilding Sail
Philip
09/30/2009

The team from Nycomed arrived early on a chilly, windy Wednesday. The weather didn't deter our intrepid sailors, and after a brief orientation aboard the schooner Liberty, the team assigned roles to each other. Each role would be essential in the completion of the team objective which was a circumnavigation of Governors Island.

The crew, got underway, and handed over to the team at the entrance to the Morris Canal. They were on their own now. The navigators, used the charts of New York harbor, and the Eldridge tide and current tables, to give the helmsman a course to steer, while the deck crew figured out how to raise sail and keep a look out for ferries, tugs and other shipping traffic.

With the brisk wind, and favorable current, the team easily completed their objective, and had a great lunch. Well done Nycomed.

TEAMWORK
Derrik

Hello this is Derrik again. Yesterday was cool. First we woke up and ate delicious breakfast again. Then I asked Phil if I can climb the mast. I was climbing the mast and it was a little scary when I got to the top. After I got to the top and came back down we started getting off rust from off the boat. Then we went to go see lost city. I'm not telling you where it is because it wouldn't be lost anymore. So don't ask me to tell you where it is. Yesterday was very special for one of our crew members. His name is Luke and he turned eight yesterday. It was his birthday. I got to make Luke a rubber band necklace. That I let him keep for his birthday. So everybody try to call the number that is on the website and wish Luke a Happy Belated Birthday. Thanks. Yesterday we were flying the kite and then we hooked a camera onto the kite and while the kite was flying the camera was taking pictures of our boat, Dave's boat, and Eric's boat. Yesterday was also sad because one of our crew members left. His name is Mike. He had to leave because he had to go somewhere. So he's not with us anymore. So now it's a little different since he is not here. Also Josh didn't come to the boat yesterday because he was doing stuff at his house. So yesterday was fun but sad at the same time. Today I'm going to be able to be a crew member for an official cruise. I'm going to be helping a lot. My mom is going to be on the boat checking my skills out. If you like to see me working the boat in action. Please call 973-309-1881 for details. Thank you. This Morning we woke up and then I ran to the bathroom. Then we came back and I went in the cabin to see what progress Luke was making with making his Bionicle toys as one. Then Mr.Stuart asked can someone take him in the dinghy and take him to the watertaxi stop. Then I dropped him off with dinghy and headed back to the slip that the Liberty is at. On my way driving back to the slip I saw a lot of sticks in the water floating probably from all those golf balls of rain that I was talking about in my other blog. The rain hit the marina pretty hard. Yea so today's my last day here as an intern on the Liberty I am pretty sad. I'm going to miss living on this pretty Schooner. The biggest thing I learned on this boat is you can't do anything without TEAMWORK. You see I had to put it in caps that's how important that word is that it needs to be in caps. Well this is probably my last blog I am going to be writing so if I ever come and be a intern on this beautiful boat again then I will talk to you soon. Bye!!! :(

Hello this is Derrik again. Yesterday was so fun. First we woke up and ate good breakfast. Then we started to wash the deck. The deck was clean. Then we were finished and then we started varnishing wood. Kevin had to sand the wood. Josh had to clean the wood and Mike and I had to paint the wood. After the varnishing was over we had a water fight. I had a hose, Josh had a hose and Kevin was getting squirt. Then Mike asked Josh to dump a bucket over his head with water. Josh did it and he left the bucket on top of his head. Then all I see is Mike fall in the Hudson River. All I could do is laugh and say EWW you fell in the Hudson River. Then after that we stopped the water fight. Then we took a ride on the dinghy. It was me, Mike, Josh, Phil, and Kevin. Then Mike and I dropped them off. Then we went out. Then Mike dropped me off and then he went out by himself. Then he came and we switched and then I went by myself. After that we took a look at the next our neighbor's boats. There boats are so nice. Then we took showers with buckets and a bar of soap. Then we went to bed. Kevin, Mike, and I were lying down. Then it started thundering and we saw lighting. Then Phil opened our hatch and said all hands on deck. Then when we heard that we knew it was serious. We go on the deck and it felt like golf balls were coming down from the sky at lighting speed. When the rain hit me it was hurting it stung. Then we had to lift the green tarp before the rain ripped it. So we did that for like 10 minutes. Then Phil said we can go back to bed. So we did and then I went to sleep. That was my exciting day yesterday. I'm having so fun and I'm not ready to go back home.

Hi this is Josh! Yesterday was probliest the funniest day I have had all summer. To begin we sanded and varnished, I was the sander along with Luke and Kevin. When I wasnt sanding cause either Kevin was using the power tool I was cleaning the boards. The stuff that we used to clean was an alcohol based substance but it smelled pretty weird. But the really fun stuff was when we had the water fight. It was more of an on and of kind of battle with me Luke, Kevin, and Derrick. Mike was trying to tke a seaman's shower by soaping his body down and then rinsing. The only thing was that when he got washed down with the hose soap got in his eyes. He asked for help so I came over and dumped a bucket on him, I must of forgot it there cause I walked away and then heard a yell. I turned around and saw Mike with a bucket on his head and his body falling in the Hudson. That was a good laugh.
I guessed I learned that teamwork really helps especially when everyone is determined. I learned this from when we were sanding. So this week I hope to have a day like yesterday, it was great.

Hi,
Its Mike again. Yesterday we went on the dinghy to get gas. And Phil told me to take out screw to make the dinghy go faster and it did . When we got back we dropped off Josh, Kevin, and Phil. It was just Derrik and me trying to see if the dinghy will go much faster and it. Before we went on the dinghy we had a water fight after we were varnishing the wood and I had soap on my hair and someone sprayed me with the hose. I got soap on my eyes and I couldn't see and I asked Josh to pour a bucket of water on me but it wasn't that much water and hew dumped it on me and left the bucket on my head. I still had water in my eyes and the worst thing happened to me I fell of the dock into the water. Later on, we went to bed and there was a storm coming and while we were falling asleep Phil called us on deck to cover all the hatches and the rain drops felt like they were bullets shooting in you're face and the storm looked like it was a hurricane just hit us. Derrik, Kevin, and I were all soaked and wet. That's all I've been doing on the Liberty

Hello,
It's Kevin. Yesterday wasn't such a good day. Mike felled into the dirty Hudson River, I flipped off of Sharon's bicycle, I had a headache and there was a thunderstorm. Ridding in the dingy and the water fight was good. We went to the fuel dock to get gas and was treated with sodas. When we got back, we rode our bikes down the ramp of the dock. That's when I fell. Josh, another crew member, was riding down behind me and the front wheel of his bike hit my back wheel and steer, uncontrollably, towards the railing. When my front wheel hit the railing, the bike, with me, flipped forward. I landed on the bottom of the ramp with the bicycle on top of me. At least I only walked away with a scraped knee and some bruises. Nurse Ruth and Nurse Sharon treated me. Then we went back out. We got to see the cigarette boat that was wrecked by a barge. We also got to explore the outermost part of the docks. We had a water fight. Mike was taking a seaman shower and he had soap in his eyes with a bucket on his head, Josh put the bucket on his head. He started to walk and fell in the water! He had to take another seaman shower. Later on, we got a tour of the Margaret and Deep Therapy. They were nice. Then, we took a seaman shower. After about two hours of sleep, Phillip open up our hatch and screamed, "all hands on deck!!" we ran outside and the rain was blistering. The shear coldness of the rain slammed against our body as we closed and covered all the hatches. After the that, I slept great that night.
There is said to be another storm later this Wednesday.
