Schooner Liberty Sails to Port Jefferson
Philip
08/31/2009, Port Jeff, Long Island

We have been looking forward to returning to Port Jeff since we left about two weeks ago. We left at about 1145, after fueling up and the fuel dock, and proceeded up the East River, under the Brooklyn bridge, past the United Nations building, and reached Hell Gate at Slack water. Soon we were in the Sound, and the wind that had been on our bow the whole time started to back, allowing us just enough angle to raise some sail. With the motor on, and wind in our sails we easily managed 6 knots or better. The wind continued to strengthen, and back, and when we pasted Huntington Bay, and were able to bear off the wind slightly, we were able to really do some great sailing. Sailing at 6.5kts, with an awesome sunset behind us, we enjoyed great company, great food, and arrived in Port Jeff around 2015.

We are going to be in Port Jeff, sailing daily from the Harborfront park twice a day. Call Sharon if you want to enjoy a truly remarkable mini-vacation. 973-309-1881 or Liberty Schooner website

Wallaby Goes South
Philip
05/07/2009, Jersey City

The crew of the schooner Liberty committed to community had spent much time in assisting a fellow traveler. Jean Pierre, owner of the Wallaby, had been taken advantage of, while attempting to get his boat south to the Caribbean. New York City is no place for a wooden working shrimp boat, unless you are happy to pay top dollar for help, so in collaboration with Captain Bill, we offered to get the Wallaby sea worthy, and deliver it to a working shipyard in the Delaware river.

We spent much time over the winter, working on ensuring the Detroit 1271 engine had a good clean fuel supply, checked the safety equipment, and bilge pumps, and eventually got underway at 15h30 on Saturday afternoon.

Except for a electrical fire in the engine room at the midnight watch change, the delivery was uneventful. Timing the tide in the Delaware River was tedious, but a necessary precaution since the Wallaby draws 10 ft. Luke was a valuable member of the crew, and was the one who first smelled the smoke and made the alarm.
