10/24/2009, Yank Marina - Dorchester, NJ
After being hauled out on Wednesday, the crew was busy preparing for the USCG inspection. All floorboards were removed to give access to the hull, and all pipes attached to the through-hulls were removed so that the Coasties can shine a light into them from the outside.
They arrived and immediately looked at the propeller before it was sent out to be re-conditioned. Then they checked the hull, and rigging, before reviewing the mechanicals.
After about 3 hours, they signed off the schooner Liberty as having passed the inspection with flying colors.

We had a wonderful trip from Jersey City, up the East River, past the UN building and Hell Gate into Long Island Sound. We timed the tides and currents perfectly, and made the journey to Port Jefferson in less than 8 hours. After arriving we discovered our starter motor wasn't engaging when we went to start the engine, and with trips scheduled for the whole week, we needed help.
We discussed our options, and decided on a plan. Captain Bill took the starter off the engine, while Tony and I packed an overnight bag.
We caught a taxi from Danford's Hotel on the waterfront to the Port Jeff train station, and then caught the 8:34pm LIRR train to Penn Station, NYC, with the starter motor in hand. Then we hopped on the subway to 33rd street, where we transfered to the PATH train. The PATH brought us to Jersey city, where we hopped over to the Light Rail system, which brought us to the Liberty Science Center station. From there we were able to pick up Tony's car, and arrived at his house at 12:30am.
After a short sleep, we were at Generator Exchange early the next morning. Fred at Generator Exchange is a great friend of the schooner Liberty, and they immediately proceeded to rebuild our starter motor, while we had breakfast. By 10 am we were in the car back on our way to Port Jeff. If you ever need help with alternators, starter motors call Fred at Generator Exchange in Jersey City (201) 333 4398. The service is excellent.

Captain Bill arrived with a gallon of high gloss white paint for Liberty's trim. This 2 part epoxy paint, requires great care to apply, but the results are outstanding! Liberty looks brand new. The wood shines, the deck shines, and now the white trim shines. We are ready for a great weekend!

Once again several volunteers showed up on a beautiful day, to work alongside each other to complete the rigging of the schooner. Thanks again to Tom, Cody, Spence, and Jean-Pierre. We are ready for our first charter, and look forward to having some inner city kids join us on board.

First Mate, Spencer, threw Cody in on the deep end. He needed a eye splice with a thimble put into our foresheet, and so, he gave Cody a Marline spike, a copy "The Riggers Apprentice", and asked her to "figure it out"!
As you can see from the photo she did a great job!

Captain Bill has worked all winter preparing our spars for a new sailing season. Yesterday he brought them up with a good friend Wayne, and we set to work rigging the boat. Here is Rupert, who is new to our crew working from the fore-spreaders. Rupert and Cody are friends of our first mate Spencer, and it was refreshing to have hardworking, adventurous volunteers for a day.
