Rigolets
06/06/2010

The Rigolets is a waterway that we go through to get into Lake Ponchartrain. We had heard rumors earlier that it was being closed off to keep the oil out of the lake. We were afraid that we wouldn't be able to get home if it was closed. It wasn't entirely closed and we made it through ok. They have stretched barges across it to create a wall with a space wide enough for boats to pass through. I guess if the oil gets close they will put another barge in place to close the gap.

Since the shrimpers cannot shrimp due to the oil they have been put into service by the government. Some are being spotters, going out into the gulf looking for oil and others, like this one, are moving booms around. We saw hundreds of them in the Dauphin Island, Alabama area just motoring around aimlessly waiting to be of service.

Booms Everywhere
06/06/2010, ICW-Panama City to Alabama

Booms are stretched out across all inlets on the ICW. The ICW is open to traffic with the booms on the side to be deployed if necessary. Haven't seen any oil, just lots of booms and equipment. People in the area are still fishing and boating as usual.
