Goodbye, Belhaven NC

09 April 2014 | Alligator River - Pungo River Canal
Jill / crisp 53 degree morning with north winds
After the tornado passed, the four boats at the town docks got together for cocktails aboard s/v Cringle, hosted by Bob and Judy. Leo from s/v Glory B, Bud and Jen from s/v SeaQuest and Tim and I shared our boating experiences and the excitement of watching a tornado pass nearby.

The following day, we heard on the news that several homes in the Belhaven / Pantego area were damaged, a few homes were destroyed, and a pickup truck driving down the road was picked up, flipped, and dropped into a field. Fortunately, no lives were lost! We rode our bikes several miles and saw one of the damaged homes and the pickup truck. It was sad to see the front section of a home completely destroyed. It was amazing to see the tops of trees snapped off thru a narrow path with no damage to trees or buildings close by. That's the closest we want to be to a tornado!

We really enjoyed our stay at Belhaven. It was nice to be at a dock and be able to walk and bike around town between the rain storms and strong winds.

The time has come to get back to traveling long days on the water. We had a great SAIL this morning out the Pungo River! We just entered the Alligator River - Pungo River Canal, which is a desolate area. We've been blessed to have so many great experiences!
