Fleets Bay in VA
19 September 2014 | Dymer Creek in Ashley Cove
Jill / ENE 10 to 15 kts dim to Calm, 77 deg, sunny afternoon
Watched a gorgeous sunrise as we left Solomons Island. Motor sailed out Patuxent River in 2 foot seas and started SAILING down the bay at Cedar Point, sailing 6 to 7 kts with a reefed jib. As the winds calmed, we SAILED with full sails and when the wind died, we started the engine. Motor sailed across the Maryland/Virginia line. In this part of the bay, there wasn't a whole lot of things to see – lots of water, especially crossing the Potomac River, an occasional pelican, target platforms, fish traps, and an occasional ship and several other sailboats. Of course we enjoyed seeing Point No Point Light and Smith Point Light. Entered Fleets Bay and navigated in Dymer Creek and anchored in lovely Ashley Cove.
It's amazing how quickly the weather can change – we had strong winds and rolly seas early in the morning and by noon the wind died and the waves calmed. Traveled about 55 miles in less than 9 hours with 4 hours under SAIL! Great day on the water!!
