Arrived in Manteo NC
06 October 2014 | Shallowbag Bay off Roanoke Sound
Jill / mid 70's and sunny
The air was crisp and the winds were light yesterday morning as we SAILED out Edenton Bay and Albemarle Sound. We planned a short day on the water, so we didn't mind sailing at only 2 kts, as long as we SAILED! We eventually started the motor, motor sailed to Yeopim River, and enjoyed a wonderful evening at anchor in a beautiful cove.
Winds looked favorable for the next couple of days, so we decided we could get to Manteo on the Outer Banks this trip after all! We left our anchorage before sunrise and enjoyed a very pleasant SAIL down Albemarle Sound! Winds were SW at 10 kts and we SAILED around 5 and 6 kts for over 25 miles! Awesome!!
Eventually the wind direction changed and it was right on our nose. We hobby horsed and rolled at times as we motored into south 15 kt winds with 1 to 2 foot seas in the big, open body of water! It wasn't uncomfortable, but it wasn't as smooth as when the winds were in our favor. Fortunately, we had a great view of Jockey Ridge and the sand dunes at Nags Head on the Outer Banks. We rounded Roanoke Island, entered Shallowbag Bay, and anchored next to the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse in Manteo.
We traveled 47 miles in 8 hours, SAILED, and we're in Manteo! What a great day!!!
