30 June 2014
I took this photo earlier today. It is a Dobsonfly. It's enormous, as you can see. The pincers are over an inch long (fortunately, they're harmless - this is the male - but the short ones of the female can draw blood and be quite painful).
Day 15 - JUN 30th - Monday
I slept in. By the time I was brushing my teeth, Steve and Cathy had brought in the electrical hook-up and were untying the lines. We cast off the floating dock and re-situated the fenders and lines to the preferred starboard side (Randy finds it much easier to tie up Persistence on the starboard) and we went right into Lock 15.
We stopped to fuel up at St. Johnsville Municipal Marina, which is situated beside Redneck Trailer Park; now that would be an address my children would be proud of...lol Steve and I are glad we situated the smaller fender ball on the rear corner of Persistence rather than her aft side. That ball has saved Persistence's several times on this trip. I would certainly suggest getting a few for any boat. We also have a bigger fender ball, which is at the bow, where it will work best for saving the hull. Even though this boat has a bow thruster, we have encountered some misjudgments of current and water flow from the adjacent waterfalls as we've entered the locks.
.. Oh no! Lock 17 requires a south wall tie up.. we are getting our work out for today ☺.. very cool though.. This is the largest single step lock on the Erie Canal.
