Day 7 Tuesday October 27, 2015
Down day at Ocracoke. We visited the Coast Guard boat docked across from us today with a few other boaters from the dock. Quite a boat. I think they called it a motor lifeboat. It’s 47’ aluminum hull with twin 450HP Detroit Diesels https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/47-foot_Motor_Lifeboat Nice crew. We chatted for about an hour with them. They were really stationed at Hatteras but the inlet has closed up and now the operate out of Ocracoke inlet. Their job on this boat is primarily helping boats in peril in the surf. One of the crew had been thrown overboard and bounced back on tethered. He said he was so stunned he didn’t really know he had been thrown off and on the boat. The boat will self right and several have rolled. They say it rarely rolls all the way over and that it usually bobs back up from whatever direction it rolled from. None of them had been flipped YET. One crew said that he had been on a boat that had a wave come up from behind and the boat almost stood on its stern. He surely thought the boat was going to flip on it’s back. Also a very import fact was that no one had been killed on this style boat. Their older 44’ had several crew members killed.
Susan talked with the two girl crew members. We invited them over because they were fascinated that our boat was pretty much a home. She said they rarely get to see the inside of a boat. I guess if you are rescuing a boat in peril it’s not the time for a tour. I hope they do come tomorrow.
We rented a golf cart for the week. So, we have wheels! We did some sight seeing and it started raining and we turned back for the boat. We did get some great fresh seafood. Grey Trout. I love grey trout. But they have not been plentiful or of any size in the Chesapeake. We had green beans and potatoes with the fish. Just really simple and yummy. We had eaten at Dajino’s restaurant for lunch and that fresh seafood was pretty filling. So, dinner was a little lighter. I think!
We also bought pirate burgee for the boat just to get in the spirit of things. The pirate festival cranks up Friday. Also we found out that children trick or treat on Halloween on the Lighthouse road from 3-5 on Halloween . We will take our candy to hand out as the kids parade down the street. So, not much else to say. Cleaned the boat some, filled our water tanks and enjoyed the down day.
Todays, picture is a boat headed out Silver Lake Harbor here at Ocracoke at sunset.
