Day 49 Tuesday, December 8, 2015
Passage - Brunswick Landing Marina to Fernandina Harbor Marina
8:12 AM underway
2:22 PM Fernandina Harbor Marina
41 miles 7.3 engine hours
We got up and headed to the Farmers Market only a few blocks away from the marina. Our feet were still tired from the walk to see the Lover’s Oak yesterday. We were told the Farmer’s Market in Brunswick opened at 7AM. When we got near the market only one vendor was setting up and it was 8AM. Disappointed we headed back to the boat to get an early start for FLORIDA.
It was interesting watching Jekyll and Cumberland Island’s go by. And we knew we should be stopping to catch their history. But we are in a bit of a hurry to get to Miami and plan on stopping at those famous places on the way north in the spring. We also passed Kings Bay Submarine Base ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Submarine_Base_Kings_Bay ) a most secretive looking base from the water with very large buildings to keep the sub fleet out of sight and what appeared to be an underwater fence across the water entering the sub base.
And then it happened just about 2PM we crossed into Florida waters. Yep the band Florida Georgia Line ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PvebsWcpto ) came to mind about then.
We tied up at Fernandina Harbor Marina on Amelia Island and they still had us in their records from 2012 so registering was a breeze. We got showers and chatted with a new trawler owner from Boston. Boaters are a most friendly bunch and conversations just start for a moment that turns into an hour or sometimes new friends for life. Just an optimistic bunch of people doing the same thing.
We walked into town to eats at a really nice restaurant 29 South. We thought maybe it had something to do with route 29 in Virginia but was just the address of the place. Very good food. With all the seafood we’ve been eating I just had a craving for fried chicken. They soak the chicken in sweet tea brine for 24 hours. Anyhow it was very good and satisfied the KFC gene in me. Susan had fish taco’s with rosemary and garlic fries ! Dessert was fun, Doughnut bread pudding with custard and coffee ice cream. I feel fat just writing this. We probably need to find a scale to jump on to check our weight. But boat life is tough and we are burning more calories than the easy living back home. You don’t see any fat boaters.
We then walked the main street of Fernandina. All the shops are decorated for Christmas and there seems to be a contest for the best window display as I saw a sign saying to vote for one particular window. I think we are going to leave later tomorrow and take another stroll into town in the morning and just anchor however far we get. Hey, did I mention we are in FLORIDA?
Today’s picture is a screen print from my chart program showing us in FLORIDA.!
