DAY 6 OF OUR GREAT ADVENTURE
Day 6 at the Dismal Swamp Welcome Center in North Carolina. I will have to post a few pictures for this day. We got away from Ocean Marine Yacht Center about 10am trying to make the 11am opening of the Deep Creek Lock about 7 miles away. We had to slow for LOTs of Rock Fishermen and one bridge we had to either wait for it's scheduled opening or drop our bimini and antennas (which we did). The bridge had 15' clearance and we were 12'6" with the top down. (A picture of me at the helm under the bridge will follow this blog). So we ended up getting to the lock about 30 minutes after the opening and had to wait until 1:30PM. We tied up to a dolphin (s group of pilings cabled together usually for large vessels to lie agains) and waited for the next opening. Had hot chocolate and lunch and got the burgee pole mounted and the next thing we knew it was time to enter the lock. We were first in and got swirled around a bit as we held our lines as the boat rose 8'. Pretty interesting ride up to the canal above. We will drop back down to sea level at the South Mills lock 5 miles further south. But we arrived at the North Carolina Welcome Center 4:42PM and there was no dock space for us. When we arrived the boats already there had fenders out and were waiting for the 3 boats they knew were on the way. We rafted 2nd out from a sailboat from Annapolis (our port side to his starboard side) and another 38' Carver rafted to our starboard side. (Rafting just means you tie your boat to another boat side by side) I did not get a picture of the 9 boats tied in this manner three deep. I hope I will get a picture in the morning before the raft-up breaks up. Some pictures from today follow. 1st picture is daybreak in our slip
