CO Detectors
OK we are fine. But we did have a CO scare last night at 1AM. The CO detector in the forward cabin alarmed. We thought it was one of the anchor alarms and then discovered it was in fact the CO alarm. Now that was strange to us as we had NOTHING burning to generate CO. I checked outside to see if a nearby boat had their generator running. NOPE. We took the alarm outside and it quit. But when we returned it to thew forward cabin it once again went off! Just like the textbook says odorless. I opened some hatches and the doors and we once again took the alarm outside to wave it around in the air to clear it's head. This time when we returned it to the cabin in stayed quiet. So, what is the CO source. I look in the bilges to see if there is anything going on down there. NO. Everything is fine. Then we discover the gas oven is still on!. We had cooked and started the oven to heat some bread with and never used it. All the times we have used the oven and cooktop burners we have never had either CO detectors go off. Usuall propane burns cleanly and must not give off much CO. But what the textbooks say is a maladjusted burner will cause propane to give ff more CO than a properly adjusted burner. SO, had the oven suddenly gotten maladjusted while we were sleeping. NO, but the propane tank was running out and PROBABLY the oven was not getting a steady supply of propane causing it to give off more CO. This morning when turned the tank on and started coffee, the burner briefly ran and went out. So the tank is empty.
So, we NORMALLY cut off the electric propane switch and the tank too when we are finished. Both of us overlooked that last night. But outr Kidde Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm worked.
By the way some told us we didn't need CO detectors because we have diesel power. The CO detectors were purchased the FIRST shopping trip for Liquid Therapy. I am scared of CO and fire on a boat. Other boats exhaust can creep into your boat. SO, definitely get Smoke / CO detectors for your boat or RV or HOME. We know of two families that had members die from CO. (One was camping and the other died on a boat using kerosine heater.
Our detectors were about $25 and we change the batteries on the change of daylight to standard time.
