Day 18 Saturday November 7, 2015
Passage River Dunes Marina to Morehead City Docks slip 9, Morehead, NC
8:45 AM Underway
1:52 PM Docked slip 9 Morehead City Docks
31 miles 6.1 engine hours
Hated leaving River Dunes Marina. It was the nicest marina we have ever been to. But it's a feeling in the air that the weather is about to change. Actually we have a COLD front coming tonight. So we want to make Morehead City today. And, apparently lots of other boats do too.
There is lots of passing going on. When larger boats pass each other a maneuver called a "slow pass" is a considerate way not to rock each other. The overtaking boat calls the other boat on the radio. The boat being overtaken slows down to idle and the overtaking boat slows down to a little or no wake speed. Both boats keep on the same course. After the faster boat passes each boat thanks each other and everyone goes back up to whatever speed they wish.
Not everyone knows or cares to slow down for the boat ahead. Then the boat over being over taken is rocked dangerously . I've gotten very good at getting our boat turned ( about 120ยบ) into the inconsiderate boats wake. MOST OF THE TIME. But we were in Adams Creek yesterday and there is not much room for the passing boat to pass me. I kept hearing on the radio boats complaining that a boat called SAND CASTLE was not slowing. And sure enough he passed throwing a horrible wake and so close I could not get the boat turned fast enough before his wake hit. Things crashed all over everywhere. Susan and I were OK. I called the jerk on the radio. Of course he didn't respond. Maybe besides not knowing how to safely operate his boat he doesn't know how to operate his radio either. But for the most part more boats are courteous and are executing a "slow pass". I think I'm going to install a dash cam for the jerks out there for insurance reasons..
I had been requested for a "slow pass" and slowed down for one of the boats to pass me and there was another close by so I stayed slow and then I recognized our friends Lee and Cheryl from Marthas Vineyard was the boat passing us. We stayed side by side Shalaylee yelling and couldn't believe how our paths had crossed again. Not since 2012. In the Bahamas. They were also headed to Morehead City and we said we would walk over to see them after everyone gets docked and cleaned up. And. so we did and it was really great seeing them. They had gotten a much larger boat and Lee and I can talk non stop about systems , engines fuel and everything boating. Susan and Cheryl can really talk too. They are so much fun. They had plans for dinner with visiting family so we will catch up with them again somewhere along the ICW. You leap frog people over and over on the trip south. That is fun too.
Today's picture is Lee & Cheryl and Susan & Me aboard Shalaylee.
