Back to the mainland
05 June 2017
A night at Birsay campsite followed our return to the mainland. We have always intended to make the trip across the tidal causeway to the Brough of Birsay, a hilly peninsula with a lighthouse, but on this occasion we were to be frustrated, as someone had spotted a piece of World War Two ordnance on the causeway, and until bomb disposal people had checked it out the causeway was closed to walkers.
Although we had prebooked our pitch at the campsite it was occupied on our arrival, and we talked to the warden later about that. It is clear that the system for online booking is as much a problem here as it is at the Stromness campsite, only worse, as they do not have internet access here to look at the bookings at all. I think I will write to the council about this.
On our way to Kirkwall in the morning on Friday 2 June we first visited the Loons RSPB reserve. Then we found a hairdresser in Finstown who could fit us in for a couple of haircuts. Then we went to James' house once again, for the weekend. I was off on Saturday morning for a quick visit to Abby's to attend her joint birthday party with Cathy, and a lot of friends and family. I flew down to Edinburgh with Flybe, around 50 minutes in the air, awesome. It was great to catch up with people at the party, and share a little bit in family life for a change.
Back to Orkney on Sunday, to prepare for our next island, number eight, North Ronaldsay, famed for its sheep that eat only seaweed, and the bird reserve where migrant birds of rare breeds are often spotted. We will be there from Tuesday to Friday, and the campervan will be craned off the ferry as there are no ro-ro facilities there. Watch this space.
