Cusco to Puno
27 November 2017
Travel day today, 27th November. Early start then ten hour journey by coach, punctuated by stops at pre-Inca sites, and a church where everything was covered either in gold leaf or silver. Our journey took us higher than before, to a point 14000 ft up, where it was 5 degrees and raining, as opposed to 25degrees and sunny at the previous stop.
Lunch was at a roadside restaurant, an excellent buffet. After a final stop at a singularly uninteresting museum - all old carved stones in poorly lit rooms - we entered the town of Juliaca. What a disastrously chaotic place it was. The road surface was not metalled, not even in the centre, and this town of half a million people looked like something from India, even our guide commented on that. Unfinished buildings everywhere, to avoid paying tax, apparently. Not a good look, I'm afraid.
Finally arrival in Puno with a first glimpse of Lake Titicaca, where tomorrow we will go on a cruise to meet the remarkable people who live on its islands.
