Belfast to Glenarm to Ballycastle
11 July 2013
The rest of the group were going to go on to Strangford, but one other boat and ourselves were not, and were going north again. SO we called up the harbour master and asked permission to leave the harbour, and off we went. You've guessed it - not enough wind to sail, so Vera the Volvo once again roared us north in calm seas towards Glenarm. A lovely little marina, with a town that had only two pubs, one possibly shut, no restaurants and not much else. I remember it being more interesting when we were there in 2008. Pam couldn't recall it at all, despite having been there also a month or two after us.
We spent two nights there so Andy could watch the British Lions rugby game on the telly in the pub, on a lovely sunny day with a southerly breeze - we could have sailed to Scotland that day - but plans is plans.
So we stayed until the next day, which dawned foogy and still.
Undaunted, we set out, hoping the sea fog was jkust inshore and that we would find our way through it, as the sun was shining brightly just above us.
I had Andy as lookout on the bow and we avoided a succession of fishing boats and made our way gradually up the coast towards Fair Head. The tide swept us on faster and faster, until through the overfalls at Fair Head we were doing about 9.5knots over the ground!
We rounded Fair Head and set a course for Ballycastle, where we tied up for the night. Meantime we heard from JU that Andy Murray had won Wimbledon, so we hoisted both our Scottish flags in tribute!
Lovely sunny day in the end!
