... various monuments to the Pilgrim Fathers are scattered around the town. Particularly the large square shaped tower (see earlier photo) and this plaque. The Pilgrim Fathers stayed for a short while on the cape while scouting craft explored the area; they finally settled in Plymouth across the bay. The Thanksgiving Celebration held in late November is in memory of their first anniversary surviving as a colony. This was with assistance from the native population and at cost of the lives of almost half of those early settlers.

Goodbye Maine! Hello Massachusetts!

An early departure from Bath to carry the last of the gurgling ebb downstream to the sea. A definite chill to the air as Spruce lifted her bow to the swell moving across the Gulf of Maine. The last glimpse of a Maine lighthouse and on southwards towards Cape Cod.

Lots of migratory and other wildlife en route: Sharks - 1; Monarch Buterflies -10; Hobby Hawks - 5; Dolphins - 6; Dragon Flies - 2 ... and a whale spouting in the distance... no partridges and no pear trees:-)
There were also several small birds and one, very finch like, hitched a ride. He looked done in and huddled, roosting under the sprayhood for the night.

We arrived in Provincetown Bay, Cape Cod, at 03:30 am. Feeling our way in amongst mooring buoys and more lobster pot floats on a dark night with no moon. A glorious canopy of stars gave a great overhead spectacle once the cloud had cleared away. Orion lying just above the horizon to the south and the plough to the north pointing at Polaris. A day ashore and probably heading off through the Cape Cod Canal in the next couple of days before the wind goes back to South West.

An afternon visit to the small city of Bath, it seems to be quite an in season tourist destination on the Kennebec River. The Bath Iron Works shipyard (we hasten to add this is not, as we are informed by one of the employees, a refit site) (see photo) takes up a sizeable length of the waterfront but the city is pretty, self contained and not too dominated by the industrial neighbour. They build naval warships of similar ilk to the Daring Class (Type 45), familar to friends back in Portsmouth, UK.

We are currently planning our trip on down to Newport (tomorrow) and later back across the Atlantic to Europe. Looking forwards to getting together with friends and family in the not too distant future.

The Hurricane season is still in full swing down south with Texas suffering floods from "Hermine" and "Igor" on its was across the ocean from the Cape Verde Islands (where we were cruising last autumn). Nothing likely to head this way at the moment so maybe the avoided potential of "Earl" will be our last hurricane while up here. Friends still in the Caribbean will, of course, be keeping a watchful eye on tropical weather for a couple more months yet.

... and a photo of one of the larger buildings from the delightfully small city of Bath in Maine, visually quite different from the Georgian namesake back at home in the UK... but possibly originally settled by folks from that part of old England.
