Little Green Boat
Spruce will soon be leaving New Zealand. We have had a wonderful time since arriving in October 2013 after sailing across the Pacific Ocean. In 2014 we shall visit Fiji, Vanu-Atu, New Caledonia and on to Australia.

Away from Spruce for an excursion ashore: a trip by road and a day's outing to Mystic Seaport in the next-door state of Connecticut. A grey and overcast day with a cool, damp, breeze from a nor-easter: winds gusting to 30 knots said the forecast but our anchor was confidently dug in and had stoutly held fast in recent winds of 35 knots.

Mystic is a strange type of museum. Founded in 1929 the exhibits it gathers are on an all together larger scale than most collections: vessels, houses, shops and a preserved rope walk with all machinery still intact....

Our wander through time commenced with what is claimed to be the last sailing whaling ship in existence, the Charles W. Morgan; hauled ashore and in the throes of renovation. Of particular interest to us after reading a book, while on our Atlantic crossing, about the loss of the Essex and a tale of extraordinary survival. The Essex was a whaling ship out of Nantucket Island, rammed by a Sperm whale and quickly sunk in the early 1800s. A number of the survivors lived some considerable time in the boats until rescued: the published stories from different people varied but cannibalism played a part. The Charles W. Morgan hailed from New Bedford, a port that usurped Nantucket as ships grew too large for their shallow waters.

Amazing to see the bulk of the stubby ship; her bluff bow and deep hold seeming very business like. The mass of the ungainly try-pots, with fire-brick surround, for rendering oil from blubber spoiled the lines of the deck; but this was her raison d'etre. Whatever ones moral stance on whaling it is hard not to admire those seamen who sailed these ships around Cape Horn and into the Pacific in search of their prey and the valuable Spermaceti oil used to light lamps in homes across the world....

The exhibits at Mystic Seaport are varied indeed. Craft little larger than dinghies and larger floating ships and yachts. A cornucopia of a seafaring past: private motor launches, working boats and racing yachts including the gorgeous Brilliant of Americas Cup fame. Buildings ashore have been brought here over the past 80-years. Shops from a bygone era: nautical instruments, printer, apothecary, to name but a few. A site of 19 acres that brings together artefacts, vessels and buildings to help gain an impression the tightly inter-woven communities that serviced craft roaming the seas in centuries of yore.

... and a picture of the coopers workshop. Barrels were the orginal form of containerisation. All sorts of good scould be stored in standard sized casks which made stowage easy. The shape enabled easy movement by one or two sailors aboard ship.

22:30 local time and blowing a hooley! The winds blew from the South this afternoon, so much so the cruise liner anchored in the estuary dragged anchor (see photos below). Then a period of calm and into the evening the wind reversed direction and has blown at Force 7 gusting to 8 for a while. The remnants of a tropical storm passing by on itway north from the Caribbean.

Spruce is lying (bouncing about) to about 50 metres (160 feet) of chain with our 20 Kg (44lb) Spade anchor well dug into the mud and shell seabed. So far holding well.

The first photo shows her blown broadside on to the wind...
