20/Mar/2012, Tobago Cays - St Vincent & Grenadines

No matter how often we see this part of the Caribbean the colours are breathtakingly beautiful. Gorgeous turquoises, blues and yellows; visual ingredients mixed in just the right proportions to please the human eye.

Anchored just North of Baradal Island in the Tobago Cays on a sandy bottom in about 6 metres deep. Nothing to windward of us except Horseshoe Reef before the broad blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The winds are more moderate than of late with a 14 knot breeze keeping a pleasantly cool climate aboard. Just two of us anchored on this side of Baradal in a slightly more exposed position. To the south some 30 boats are clustered in a huddle to leeward of the island. We much prefer a less busy anchorage and try to avoid the crowds.

20/Mar/2012, Rameau Bay - Canouan

Yesterday, Sue, Andy & John enjoyed a dive along the sloping edge of the bay at about 60 feet deep. Corals displayed their splendour, fish continued their eternal struggle for survival. An elegant Moray Eel lay partially concealed amongst rocks, his fins rippling and head protruding to examine these intruders into his domain. Crystal clear waters gave a distant view of flora and fauna; as we approached the dulled blue/green exploded into a myriad of spectacular colours and palpable textures as the late morning sunshine burst through to illuminate the depths.

Today we plan on hauling anchor and sailing off to Tobago Cays. It is likely to be a busy venue but hopefully snorkeling with Turtles and other sea life on the reefs should be worthwhile.

An early morning phone call heralded our son, Robin and his girlfriend, Hanneke, making their plans to join us in April. Hurrah! Hurrah! Beaming smiles all round. They hope to come diving in the Grenadines. A lot more underwater frolics will be our lot during the next few weeks.

Snorkelling with the Mary Ann IIs

18/Mar/2012, Rameau Bay - Canouan

A call from Mary Ann II. Friends John & Julia and dog Murphy were anchored 6 miles away in Salt Whistle Bay, at the island of Mayreau, and heading to Canouan this morning. An interlude to do some chores. So washing with the manual machine, the both of us and a couple of trug buckets, to start the day.

A convivial brunch after their arrival: eggs, American style pancakes and lots of plantains. They ripen so fast in this climate. A chance to catch up on news and then a fine snorkel excursion along the edge of the bay. A good selection of coral, fishes (too numerous to name them all but included: Spotted Drum, Porcupine Fish, Four Eyed Butterfly, Banded Butterfly, Parrot Fish) and moray eels. The overcast skies occasionally broke to let the sun stream through illuminating the colourful vistas below water brilliantly. The corals look healthier than two years ago when we last anchored here.

17/Mar/2012, Rameau Bay - Canouan

Friday night Bequia. Happy hour at a bar with live guitar music for a couple of hours was followed by BBQ roadside food and the "Jump Up". Loud reggae music with an impressive set of speakers pulled outside the rum shack, just to make sure us passers-by didn't fail to spot the poorly lit venue. Altogether a lively night out with lots of people on the streets.

A rapid tour of the anchorage this morning saying goodbye to fellow cruisers... always a sad moment as some will be on a different tack into the future and wakes are unlikely to cross again.

The sail south to Canouan was an easy motion and a steady 7 knots through the water in a fairly steady 18 knot breeze from the east. Bequia quickly disappeared astern and Canouan climbed out of the sea to meet us. No sign yet of the Mary Ann IIs who were reported to be arriving here today but we should find them in the locale soon.

The photo shows the north coast of Canouan as we came out of the current and choppy seas into calmer waters.
