Night on the Town
Andy & Sue
05/Aug/2012, Cartagena - Colombia

Our first night in town and out for a meal with friends Birgit & Christian from aboard Pitufa. A stroll into the tourist centre gave sight to a completely different vista than that found in Santa Marta where tourism is but a small part of a fairly functionally focused city. Horse drawn carriages, scenic illumination, an evening wedding ceremony and a multitude of trinket sellers in the squares.

A short taster for the next week of sights, sounds museums and galleries.

Lesser of Two Weevils?

How to choose the Lesser of Two Weevils, we prefer the dead one ourselves. Horror upon horror we found some of our pasta stock had the critters feasting their hearts out. That will teach us not to take on more stock than we have plastic tubs for... or maybe they came with the stock bought from a store???

One of the joys of cruising is to preserve and protect valuable stocks of food gathered for the longer periods away from regular shore supplies; like the next couple of months after departing Cartagena.

Arrival at a New Port
Andy & Sue
04/Aug/2012, Cartagena - Colombia

A mixture of motoring in oily calm with sluggish large swell from the NE, motor-sailing and genuine sailing with winds up to 28 knots from the astern sector. Finally we arrived at the approaches to Cartagena. The much mentioned Pizzaz waypoint off the passage through the submerged wall at Bocas Grande was still accurate, the depth under the keel was about 1.5 metres (3.6m total depth) as reported. The passage marked by red and green buoys was easy to find and we could see the buoys from 2 miles off.

Pitufa was at anchor off Club Nautico. We last saw Birgit and Christian in Spaanse Water, Curacao about 7 weeks ago. Moana with Pedro aboard radioed to say he arrived a couple of hours after us after also departing Santa Marta yesterday.

This photo shows high rise Cartegena from seaward ....

Great to read of your progress. We'll be interested to hear your comments on anchoring in Cartagena, as we have heard reports it is very dirty. We're looking at hauling out at Manzanillo Marina Club and leave the boat there for a month at Christmas.

...and a tantalising sample of the old Spanish Colonial architecture which we hope to explore over the next few days.
