Dykes - Dark Basaltic Igneous Intrusions forced vertically into the softer red volcanic ash/sedimentary rocks. The sea has also been carving magnificent caves into the softer rock.
Looking back to the West from the isthmus of Sao Lourenco at the Estern end of Madeira. This area is far more barren than most of the island to the West.
Thistles and dried out vegetation. We assume the sping must be rather more verdant and colourful.
A building that appears to be a research station in an oasis. We were surprised to see the palms.

Seascape and crashing waves - the side facing the Portuguese trade winds at the Eastern end of Madeira.
Occasionally a plant manages to cling onto the clif tops!

We hired a car for fours days and travelled as far around the Island as possible;from the coast to the highest mountains.

The lavadas were built to carry the rain water from the wetter northern slopes of the Island to the southern slopes. The Levadas are a network of narrow water chanels. The rain water is captured and carried along a gentle gradient contouring the mountains.
